Remains of murdered Pinay businesswoman in UAE to be brought to PHL Wednesday
The remains of Lorna Lim Varona, the Filipina businesswoman who was murdered by a Filipino family friend in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is expected to be brought home to the Philippines on October 3.
A report of the news site Emirates 24/7 said the Varona's daughter Liza said they have received clearance from UAE authorities and that they "will fly out on Wednesday morning.”
A separate report on the news site Gulf News said the day of the arrival of Varona's remains in the Philippines coincides with the 40th day after her death.
For Catholics, the soul of the deceased either goes to heaven, hell, or purgatory on the 40th day after the person died.
Gulf News said Pablo, the husband of Varona, 51, will take her remains home aboard an Emirates flight. Their daughters Lourdes and Maria Liza will fly to the Philippines also on Tuesday, the report said.
In Manila, the couple’s sons Joseph Luke and Joseph Louis, are preparing their mother’s funeral arrangements.
A closed-casket wake will be held for Varona at Funeraria Paz at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City, from October 4 to 7.
Varona’s funeral is scheduled on October 8 at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City, the report added.
Money motives
Varona went missing on August 26 after she met a friend, who owed her money, an earlier report on GMA News Online said.
She never went home that day and was later found on September 1 – nearly a week since she went missing – inside the trunk of her abandoned Jaguar, bathing in her own blood.
The suspect in Varona's killing is Ricardo Bechavez, a Filipino who happens to be a close family friend of the victim for over two decades.
Bechavez allegedly borrowed Dh 250,000 (roughly Php 2,850,000) from Varona, who went missing on the day she came to collect the loan payment.
Bechavez has already admitted to the crime.
The Emirates 24/7 report on Tuesday said V arona's family first had the chance to view her body about two weeks ago.
Her daughter Liza said, “I keep on remembering what happened to her. I still see her. She’s always on my mind.”
Fought until the end
The Gulf News report quoted Varona’s elder daughter Maria Lourdes as saying they “already had an idea” the victim died violently, adding her death certificate confirmed it.
The death certificate suggested Varona’s attacker stabbed her mainly on her chest and abdomen. Lorna also sustained a fractured rib and punctured lungs which bled internally.
However, defensive marks were also found on Lorna’s left palm, which sustained a big cut. The family believed Lorna might have held off the murder weapon.
“After reading the report, I told my dad that mom really fought her attacker based on the wounds that she sustained and knowing the kind of person that she was. My mum’s tolerance for pain is high. So I am certain that she fought until the end, maybe until her heart stopped beating,” Lourdes said. - VVP, GMA News
