OFW guide: 10 traits of superachievers

How do the world's most successful people do it? What's their secret for achieving phenomenal success?

To find out how some superachievers accomplished great tasks, authors Camille Sweeney and Josh Gosfield interviewed some outstanding people involved in different fields.

Their book titled “The Art of Doing: How Superachievers Do What They Do and How They Do It So Well,” shares some of the success secrets of actress Laura Linney, Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, crossword mastermind Will Shortz, to name a few.

An article on the business site Inc said the accomplishments of the people interviewed for the book were so diverse and it seemed like "they have nothing in common except the magnitude of their awesomeness."

“We didn’t want to theorize about success. We went straight to the source, finding the most amazing people in all fields and asking them, ‘How do you do what you do?’” Gosfield told Inc.

In an article on the Forbes news site, Sweeney and Gosfield revealed some of the things that superachievers do that separate them from "mere mortals."

(1) Pursue a vision

Achieving great things starts with having an inspirational vision. However, it does not end there. Every vision must be supported by concrete action.

Be committed to your vision. Be persistent. Working toward  your vision must be part of your daily routine.

“Every great success starts with inspiration, but not every inspiration leads to success,” Gosfield said.

(2) Don't give up

There are times when you can't solve a problem with just one try. Don't give up when troubles arise.

What sets achievers apart from losers is that the former knows how to tackle a problem from a different angle.

If you can't solve a problem using one solution, try a different tactic.

Take a step back to see what you are doing wrong. Find another solution. Superachievers never surrender.

(3) Get support

It's impossible to do everyone on our own. We need help and support.

Achievers know that they will need help in pursuing their goals.

Whether it's friends, family, group or a community, you need to entrust your goals with a support team who propels you to your targets.

(4) Listen

Achievers don't just do things on their own, they are always open to suggestions and know how to listen.

By doing this, they get new ideas which they can compound to their goals or even find out ways of making it easier to achieve their goals.

(5) Communicate

It's all about how you get your point across to the other person without being too modest or coming out too rude.

Through proper communication, achievers get the support from people around them in the industry, getting them one step closer to their goals.

(6) Test ideas

Achievers aren't afraid to get their hands dirty, particularly when it comes to their ideas that would lead to their goals.

“Everybody has a bias to think their own idea is brilliant. “[Achievers] roll it out in an environment that’s as close as possible to the market,” Gosfield said.

(7) Manage emotions

Achievers make a point to manage their emotions especially those involving work and personal life. When these get entangled, it would create confusion that will hinder them from success.

“It’s so easy to be derailed by them, but these people are able to channel anger and frustration into their work,” Sweeney said.

(8) Constant evolution

Another trait of achievers is that they know how to roll in with the punches and they do this through evolving.

They adapt to the situation that they are thrown into, finding the necessary means to solve the problem.

(9) Patience

You can't go far if you don't have a certain amount of patience.

Achievers know how to be patient and wait for the perfect time to pounce on an opportunity.

They know that they will be rewarded in the end.

When the rewards don't come right away, you might think giving up is your best option. But stay put as you'll never know when the opportunity will come knocking at your door.

(10) Pursue happiness

"Success fuels happiness, and happiness in turn fuels greater success," the Forbes article said.

Passionately pursuing happiness in one's life and work is a "win-win" situation, the report said.

Happiness fuels one's drive to achieve, creating a cycle of success. - Andrei Medina, VVP, GMA News
