Statement of the Department of Foreign Affairs on the Situation in the Korean Peninsula

8 March 2013
The Philippines welcomes and supports the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2094 (2013) which imposes sanctions on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in response to the nuclear test conducted by DPRK on 12 February 2013.
The Philippines reiterates its call for the DPRK to abandon its nuclear weapons programme in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner. The Philippines urges the DPRK to act as a responsible member of the international community.
The Philippines also expresses its deep concern on the recent announcement by DPRK that it is voiding all non-aggression agreements with the Republic of Korea. The DPRK’s announcement raises tensions in the Korean Peninsula which   threaten regional peace and stability.
The Department of Foreign of Affairs has instructed the Philippine Embassy in Seoul to intensify efforts with Filipino community organizations to prepare contingency plans in view of the current situation. END
