Korean Embassy closed Friday for 'Samiljeol'

The Korean Embassy in the Philippines on Friday said it will be closed on Friday to mark its  Independence or Declaration Day.

"The Korean Embassy will be closed tomorrow, March 1, in observance of Korean Independence Movement or 'samiljeol,'" it said in a post on its Twitter account.

It posted a similar announcement on its Facebook page.

A separate announcement on the Korean Embassy website said March 1 is considered a public holiday in Korea.

"Samiljeol" commemorates the March 1 Movement in 1919, when 33 Korean nationalist students declared independence in Seoul.

The action triggered civil protests during the occupation of the Korean Empire by Japan. It eventually led to the establishment of the provisional government of the Republic of Korea.

The embassy is located at 122 Upper McKinley Road, McKinley Town Center, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

It can be reached by phone at 856-9210, or by email at philippines@mofat.go.kr. - VVP, GMA News
