Families of 21 Pinoy UN peacekeepers grateful for safety of loved ones
The relatives of the 21 Filipino peacekeepers who were released by rebels in Syria last week expressed their relief at the positive development even though they have yet to see their loved ones return to the Philippines.
A report Tuesday on GMA News TV's "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon" said the relatives of the relatives were grateful that their loved ones have been freed by the Syrian rebels.
The wife of peacekeeper Sgt. Alan Gabunales of Zamboanga del Sur said she finally felt at ease after knowing the news about the incident, although she said she and her husband have yet to talk after the incident.
The family of Capt. Xy-rus Meneses of North Cotabato, meanwhile, said they will still support him should he still remain as a peacekeeper following the ordeal.
Meanwhile, the relatives of Maj. Michael Mangahas of Nueva Ecija expressed their hope that he and the other peacekeepers would be able to go back to the country soon.
News of the peacekeepers' release was reported on March 9, Saturday, more than three days after they were abducted by the Syrian rebels.
The Palace said it is coordinating with the United Nations about bringing the peacekeepers home.
However, Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesperson Col. Arnulfo Burgos Jr. on Monday said the men have not expressed intention to return to the Philippines yet, noting as well that their tours of duty in Syria are scheduled to end in three to four months. - Gian C. Geronimo, VVP, GMA News
