OFW guide: How to avoid becoming an 'invisible person' in the workplace
Being “invisible” at work can be one of the most discouraging experiences in your career.
According to career site Mind Tools, this might be the result of your good work, done on a regular basis, but eventually taken for granted.
Even though you are a hard worker who always beats deadlines and submits excellent work, all your efforts will be useless if you aren't being considered by the bosses for promotion and awards.
To help you get noticed, the business site Inc. compiled a list of tips to get yourself noticed at work.
(1) Let results do the talking
It is very rewarding to get the approval of your bosses and co-workers when you work hard at a certain task.
If people know that you are a results-oriented person and that you are in the company to contribute then getting noticed for your accomplishments will not be a problem.
But if you're all talk about what you plan to do, then get ready to be left in the dust by the silent workers.
(2) Promote others
Promoting others doesn't mean that you are reducing the promotion that you need for yourself. In fact, you are actually promoting yourself indirectly when you promote others.
Remember that when you do good to others, more good will follow and happen to you.
Whenever you promote others they will appreciate this and chances are that they will promote you without you asking.
There's no need to put down other people when you can instead opt to promote yourself by promoting others.
(3) Share your ideas and beliefs
Being subtle is sometimes better than presenting concrete and straight to the point facts and figures. The latter usually is misperceived as being conceited and this will get you nowhere.
Present ideas which are not so specific. If your boss or co-worker is interested, they will ask about it.
Then that is the time where you can go in specifics without being labeled as conceited.
(4) Accept and admit your mistakes
Accepting and admitting your mistakes is one thing that some people could never do.
However, doing this allows you to show a side which is vulnerable and this is an essential skill for a great leader.
People tend to like someone who knows, accepts, and admits his failures rather than someone who makes excuses and blames others for his failures.
(5) Choose a path
If you really want to be noticed, make sure that your skill sets are attention-grabbing.
The next step is to hone the skills in that set so that you will become the top choice for a particular skill set.
Being a jack of all trades will land you nowhere because none of your skills stand out. No one will be promoting you because you are a master at nothing.
“Your job is to figure out your super power--what sets you apart--and do it better than anyone else. If you're really good at something, people will flock to you for that skill. It may not be verbalized to you, but it will be evident by the sheer number of people you have knocking on your door,” Inc. said.
(6) Promote yourself
Nothing's wrong with self promotion, especially if you've done something spectacular.
Just make sure that you promote yourself to the right people at the right moment. Otherwise, this may come out as bragging.
To some, it may even come as an inspiration which will propel them to make their own success stories while pursuing their goals. - Andrei Medina, VVP, GMA News
