VP Binay to Pinoys in strife-torn Egypt: Keep in touch with PHL Embassy

Vice President Jejomar Binay on Thursday urged Filipinos in Egypt to stay in touch with the Philippine Embassy in Cairo and take needed precautions amid growing unrest there.

Binay, the presidential adviser on overseas Filipino worker concerns, said the Philippine government is ready to provide them the needed help.

"I urge our kababayans in Egypt to take all the necessary precautions and to immediately get in touch with the Philippine embassy in Cairo to receive instructions. I would like to assure our kababayans and their relatives here that the Philippine government is prepared to provide the needed assistance," he said in a post on his Facebook page.

He also urged Filipinos to pray for the safety of the OFWs in Egypt, and for peace to return to the country.

"I ask everyone to pray for their safety and for peace to reign in Egypt," he said.

Earlier on Thursday, the Department of Foreign Affairs raised the crisis alert level in Egypt to level 3.

This was due to the "escalating civil unrest and insecurity as well as the declaration of a month-long State of Emergency in Egypt," the DFA said in a news release.

The agency added DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario already instructed the Philippine Embassy in Cairo to assist in the repatriation of Filipinos who wish to return to the Philippines.

There are around 6,000 Filipinos in Egypt, it noted.

Under Alert Level 3, Filipinos may seek voluntary repatriation of Filipinos from Egypt.

"The deployment of new workers, as well as the return to Egypt of vacationing workers, spouses of Egyptian nationals, Islamic University students and their dependents, is likewise suspended," it added.- VVP, GMA News
