8 Pinoys receive Chevening scholarships to study in UK

Eight Filipinos have been awarded scholarships to pursue a Master's Degree in world-class universities in the United Kingdom through the prestigious Chevening Scholarship program.

The eight Filipinos will pursue studies in healthcare, Islamic finance, environment, socio-economic development, law and information and cyber security, according to a news release from the British Embassy in Manila.

British Ambassador Asif Ahmad congratulated the scholars during the send-off program at his residence, saying the program "helps unlock potential in people that can make them and their countries better."

The eight scholars accepted in the 2014 Chevening scholarships are:

(1) Maharlika Alonto
Head of Accounting and Finance Department
Al-Amanah Islamic Investment Bank of the Philippines
Preferred subject of study, school: MSc Investment Banking and Islamic Finance, University of Reading
Why pick this course: Promotion of financial competence as a tool in Muslim Mindanao's economic development and to augment financial markets.

(2) Armi Bayot
Lawyer, Office of the Solicitor’s General
Part of government legal team in peace process with Moro Islamic Liberation Front
Preferred subject of study, school: LLM Law, King’s College London
Why pick this course: Institutionalization of a transitional justice program, "correct historical injustices, and address human rights violations" in Muslim Mindanao.

(3) Evangeline Co
Court Attorney VI in the Office of Associate Justice Arturo D. Brion, Supreme Court of the Philippines
Preferred subject of study, school: LLM in Commercial Law, University of Edinburgh
Why pick this course: Promotion of corporate social responsibility

(4) Albert Domingo

(5) Anna Oposa

(6) Junefe Payot
Court Attorney at the Office of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines
Preferred subject of study, school: MSc in Poverty and Development, University of Manchester
Why pick this course: Raise awareness on urban poverty and development; resume teaching in university

(7) Marie Tanya Recalde
Bank Officer V, Regional Cooperation and Negotiations Group, International Relations Department, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas
Preferred subject of study, school: MCL in Corporate Law, University of Cambridge
Why pick this course: Enhance country's trade policy and standing in the international arena

(8) Carlos Ely Tingson
Information Security Team of the Presidential Security Group in Malacañang Park
Preferred subject of study, school: MSc In Information Security, Royal Holloway, University of London
Why pick this course: Implement new security programs in all branches of government; revitalize a national cyber security office

Ahmad, meanwhile, encouraged more Filipinos to apply for the scholarship program.

"For all those people with intelligence and passion for making a difference in the Philippines, I would like them to apply for a Chevening scholarship. The competition is tough but I know that there is a wide range of talent from right across the Philippines," he said.

Interested applicants will need to meet the program's minimum English language requirement, must have two years' worth of work experience, a degree equivalent to an upper second-class honors degree in the United Kingdom, a visa, and an unconditional offer from a university in the UK.

Over 600 individuals from 144 countries and territories will be supported by the scholarship for school year 2014-2015.
