Jeepney campaign seeks to connect Fil-Ams to community services, resources
“Jeep ng Bayan,” owned and operated by the Pilipino Workers’ Center (PWC), kicks off its tour of various churches and cities in Southern California on September 14 at St. Philomena Parish in Carson City, bringing information about programs and services available to the community, according to organizers.
The Super Tour begins its journey in Carson headed by Reverend Oscar Solis, Auxiliary Bishop of San Pedro Pastoral Region. He will invite the community to support the 2nd National Assembly of Filipino Priests to be held in Orlando, Florida.
PWC Executive Director Aqui Versoza said the “personality and strong charisma” of the jeepney will connect the community to information about services and resources and invite them to join the movement to build a more Powerful Pinoy/Pinay Community Programs and services that include:
-- Driver’s License Campaign. January 1, 2015 is the day when all Californians, no matter the immigration status, can receive Driver’s Licenses. PWC is providing assistance in obtaining a driver’s license by educating and assisting applicants to prepare documents, apply and review for the written test, and explain why no one should be afraid to apply.
-- Voters Education Campaign. To build a Powerful Pinoy/Pinay Community that decision-makers will listen to, PWC urges Fil-Ams to register. PWC is assisting with voter registration, information to prepare the community to make informed choices on November 4th.
-- Low-cost Immigration Services such as family petitions, consultations, applications for U.S. Citizenship, applications for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, and more.
-- “Paluwagan,” a lending circle with no interest and no fees.
-- Overtime Rights under the CA Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. This will educate caregivers, domestic workers and employers on their rights and responsibilities, overtime computation, and wage theft legal assistance.
-- Phone and Utilities Campaign. This will provide education and assistance for anyone who has a problem with phone bills, gas bills or electric/water bills. This will help community members develop awareness if they are being over-charged.
-- Temporary Protected Status for Philippines. PWC is collecting support to remind the government that one year after Haiyan, FilAms are still continuing to ask for TPS designation from the U.S. Government.
