Embassy monitoring Pinoys in quake-hit Japan prefecture


The Philippine Embassy in Japan is closely monitoring the situation and well-being of Filipinos in the Yamagata prefecture following the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that hit the area on Tuesday night.
The embassy said there are 815 registered Filipinos in Yamagata prefecture, located in Northern Japan.
"The Embassy is closely monitoring the situation and the well-being of Filipinos in the area and is ready to assist as needed," the embassy said.
"The Embassy in Tokyo and Consulate General in Osaka have also issued urgent advisories to Filipinos in the affected areas," it added.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami alert for Yamagata prefecture and in coastal areas in Niigata and Ishikawa prefectures, but it has since been lifted, according to the embassy.
Japan sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where many of the world's earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are recorded.
Last June, a deadly tremor rocked the Osaka region, killing five people and injuring over 350.
On March 11, 2011, a devastating 9.0-magnitude quake struck under the Pacific Ocean, and the resulting tsunami caused widespread damage and claimed thousands of lives. —KBK, GMA News

STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy. MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday.
