Huge number of OFWs in Dubai 'big factor' in Duterte’s decision to join Expo 2020 – DTI
MANILA, Philippines – Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said the presence of a huge number of Filipinos in the United Arab Emirates played a "big factor" in the Philippines' decision to join EXPO 2020 Dubai.
“I believe that it was a big factor on why President [Rodrigo Duterte] decided to commit the Philippines’ participation in the EXPO 2020 Dubai…. That’s the reason why we are all here,” said Lopez, who heads the Philippine Organizing Committee (POC).
At the first POC meeting on Wednesday, May 22, Lopez said that the goal is to maximize the Philippine participation in EXPO 2020 Dubai through a concerted and cost-effective national approach.
Lopez noted that the global event would be one of the biggest events that the DTI, together with other agencies that form part of the POC, will participate in.
During the meeting, DTI Assistant Secretary and Alternate Commissioner-General Rosvi Gaetos discussed some of the major activities of the Philippines at EXPO 2020 Dubai, such as Philippine National Day and National Week Celebration.
Royal Pineda, director for theme and concept development; and Marian Roces, curator and in-charge of the content development, presented to the committee the theme, concept, architectural perspectives, and the content of the Philippine “Bangkota” Pavilion.
Pineda regards the Philippine Pavilion as a “wise investment.”
“We want the ‘Bangkota’ to be a portal of transforming the Filipino mindset and that is why we are designing it as a knockdown architecture that will be temporary in Dubai but is permanent in Clark, Pampanga, to become a venue for all Filipinos,” he said. – Rappler.com
