BSP reiterates warning vs text scams targeting public, OFWs

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas reiterated Friday its warning against text scams that target the public, especially overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Scammers use fictitious names, introduce themselves as government officials and tell potential victims that they won in a BSP-sponsored raffle, the BSP said in an advisory on its website.

“We repeat: The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas does not conduct raffles," the advisory said.

According to the BSP, scammers would tell their victims to send an amount of money through an account in order to claim their cash prizes.

The account could be in a bank or in a remittance company, it said, adding that Victims would also be asked to send prepaid load to the scammers’ mobile phone numbers.

“Once the scammers receive the money and the prepaid load, the victims would no longer be able to contact the cheats again," the advisory said.

It added that recipients of such text messages should report immediately to the Anti-Money Laundering Council secretariat at the fifth floor of the BSP complex in Manila.

Recipients can call the AMLC at 3023982 and 5247011 local 2372, or the BSP corporate affairs office at 5234832 and 5247011 local 2259. - GMANews.TV
