Filipinos in Brunei urged register at RP embassy for 2010 elections

MANILA, Philippines - Filipinos in Brunei have been urged to register at the Philippine Embassy starting February 2 for the country's 2010 national elections so that they can help choose the country’s next leaders, an online report said.

"I am calling on all my kababayans [countrymen] who are not otherwise disqualified under the law to register as overseas absentee voters (OAV) and exercise their right to select the country's next president, vice president and the 12 senators in the 2010 national elections," Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Virginia H Benavidez told the Borneo Bulletin.

The Commission on Elections has announced that continuing registration for OAVs will start on February 1 and end on August 31.

According to the report, Filipino nationals who wish to register have to personally appear at the consular section of the Philippine Embassy and fill in the OAV Form No. 1 which they can get from the embassy or download from www.philippineembassybrunei.net, www.comelec.gov.ph or www.dfa.gov.ph.

The accomplished OAV Form No. 1 need to be submitted together with a valid passport or certification if the passport is not available or a seaman's book for seafarers.

After that, the applicant will undergo an electronic or digital recording of photograph, signature, and right thumb mark through biometric capture.

The Comelec has said those who have previously registered at the Philippine Embassy in Brunei and have voted during the 2004 and 2007 Philippine elections need not register again.

Only new voters who will be 18 years old, voters who will be based in Brunei on the general election day on May 10, 2010, and OAVs registered in Brunei but failed to vote during the 2004 and 2007 elections need to register. - Kimberly Jane T. Tan, GMANews.TV
