A 22-year-old Filipino was sentenced to 15 years in jail for allegedly trying to kill an Iranian woman he was robbing in April last year, while a 29-year-old Filipino was sentenced to six months imprisonment for peeping.

In the first case, UAE-based news site Khaleej Times reported that the Dubai Court of First Instance also ordered the man’s deportation after serving his jail term.

The accused, who was not identified in the report, had denied stabbing the woman in her shoulder and back during a robbery attempt on April 8 last year.

Citing court records, the report said the Filipino allegedly tried to rob the Iranian woman of her credit cards, cash worth Dh5,000 and 300 euros or P79,899, and mobile phone.

The report quoted the victim as saying that she was on her way to a friend’s place when the suspect approached her and asked for her belongings at knifepoint. She said the suspect stabbed her twice in the shoulder and back before fleeing the scene.

The suspect, who was arrested in his workplace in Al Quoz Industrial Area, admitted that he robbed the woman because he was in dire need of money.

6 months for peeping tom

In a separate case, the Court of First Instance sentenced a Filipino legal accountant to six months in jail for secretly taking photos of a Filipina in a toilet.

The 29-year-old Filipino was also ordered deported after serving his jail term, Khaleej Times also reported.

According to the 28-year-old Filipina complainant, the incident happened around 8 a.m. on February 4 when she entered the bathroom and found an iPhone hidden under a rug placed near the door.

She said she learned of the iPhone's owner when she checked the photos in it. She also said a 31-minute video was stored in the phone and it was running when she checked it, forcing her to bring the matter to authorities.

The Khaleej Times report said the accused admitted hiding his phone in the toilet with the video mode on to snap pictures of women. - with Jerrie Abella/KBK, GMANews.TV
