New Libyan leader lauds Pinoy nurses, supports Mindanao peace


New Libyan President Mohammed el-Magarief lauded Filipino nurses and medical workers in Libya for their important contribution to Libyan society, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
 
DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez said the Libyan leader made this acknowledgment when new Philippine envoy to Libya Oscar Orcine presented his credentials to him last Oct. 22.
 
"(The) President of Libya acknowledged (the) contribution of Filipino workers to Libyan society during Ambassador Oscar Orcine's presentation of credentials," Hernandez said in a post on his Twitter account.
 
During the tension in Libya, many Filipino medical workers had chosen to stay behind and tend to the injured.
 
A separate news release on the DFA website said the new Libyan leader also stressed the Ambassador's role in enhancing relations between Libya and the Philippines.
 
He likewise wished Orcine success in his mission in the new Libya, the DFA said.
 
Peace process
 
During his audience with el-Magarief, Orcine conveyed to him the greetings of President Benigno Aquino III and of the Filipino people.
 
He also thanked him for Libya's significant contribution to the peace process.
 
Libya was a member of the International Monitoring Team looking into the ceasefire between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
 
For his part, Magarief cited the long-established and friendly relations between Libya and Philippines since 1976.
 
He acknowledged the signing of a framework peace agreement between the government and the Bangsamoro "as a significant milestone in establishing enduring peace and development in Mindanao."
 
Orcine also expressed the Philippines' continuing commitment to the march to freedom and democracy of the new Libya and conveyed the country’s best wishes for the Libyan people.
 
"He also thanked Libya for giving protection to the thousands of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) evacuated during the revolution last year as well as to the Filipino nurses and other medical, teachers and skilled technical workers who chose to remain to carry out their duties in numerous hospitals and worksites and camps in Libya," the DFA said.
 
Orcine also expressed his resolve to promote excellent relations between the two countries by pursuing agreements and implementing cooperation in different fields: political, health, labor, education, human resources, information and communications technology, investments, tourism and commerce, socio-cultural, and others. –KG, GMA News
