Pinoys in Florida advised to take precautions vs. Hurricane Dorian


Filipinos in Florida and along the path of Hurricane Dorian in the US were advised on Friday to take precautions against Hurricane Dorian.
According to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center, Dorian remains to be an "extremely dangerous major hurricane" moving northwest near the Bahamas and approaching the Florida peninsula.
It is expected to cause a storm surge that will raise water levels by as much as 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.5 meters) above normal levels in northwestern Bahamas.

Dorian began on Friday as a Category 2 hurricane, strengthened into a Category 3, and is expected to reach Category 4 over the weekend before it makes landfall in Jacksonville, Florida. The hurricane's winds are expected to blow at more than 130 mph (210 kph).
"The Philippine Embassy advises Filipino communities along the path of Hurricane Dorian to monitor the movement of the storm, undertake all necessary preparations, and heed the warnings of local officials as the hurricane is expected to move over the Atlantic well east of the southeastern and central Bahamas today and on Friday, approach northwestern Bahamas on Saturday, and move near or over portions of the northwest Bahamas on Sunday," the Philippine Embassy in Washington said in a Facebook post.
The embassy added that the National Hurricane Center warned of heavy rains over Bahamas, Florida, and elsewhere in the southeastern US this weekend until the middle of next week.
A state of emergency was already raised by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in counties along the hurricane's path.
Approximately 25,000 people with Filipino origin live in Jacksonville, and 143,000 people with Filipino origin live in Florida, the embassy said.
"The Philippine Embassy will continue to monitor developments and coordinate with the Filipino and Filipino-American communities in these areas," it said.
