Filipinos in Northern Marianas to hold 'fiesta' on Independence day

MANILA, Philippines - While Filipinos marked Independence Day Thursday, the Filipino community in Saipan will celebrate the occasion on Sunday.

Online news site Saipan Tribune reported the Philippine Consulate General and united Filipino organizations will hold the traditional "Pistang Pinoy" on June 15 at the Garapan Central Park starting at 9 a.m.

The Philippine Consulate General held the annual flag-raising ceremony at the Marianas Business Plaza grounds last June 8.

For their part, the United Filipino Organizations (UFO) had lined up activities for Sunday's festivities, showcasing Filipino culture and tradition, food, goods, entertainment and other activities.

Lined up are musical performances by Rated R and Fat Joy Slim, song numbers by the Uncle Ben's Saipan Dream Academy Stars, games for both children and adults, magic shows, and prizes.

UFO president Flor Miranda emphasized the importance of the day coming ahead as it marks the day for all overseas Filipino workers around the world "a chance to enjoy our country's freedom."

"I just want to invite everybody, including those from Tinian and Rota, to come and join us at this big event to say Mabuhay to everybody," Miranda said.

Sunday's guests will include Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela, and Philippine Consul General Wilfredo DL. Maximo. - GMANews.TV
