Korea, RP sign technical cooperation project for Korean Language Training

A technical cooperation project on strengthening the development of a Korean language skills program was forget recently between the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA).

The cooperation agreement was signed at the TESDA Main Office in Taguig City on February 19,2008 by KOICA Resident Representative Kim In, TESDA Deputy Director General Milagros Dawa-Hernandez, and PNVSCA Executive Director Joselito de Vera and was witnessed by authorized officials on both governments.

The project aims to strengthen the development of a Korean Language Program for Filipino workers seeking employment in South Korea. This will also provide educational opportunities for Filipinos to acquire needed knowledge and skills through Korean Language Education for Economic and Social Advancement. TESDA recognizes that labor markets within and outside the country demand that workers are able to speak other languages and understand cultural differences.

Sixteen Korean language instructors from the Korea Overseas Volunteer (KOV) program will be deployed by KOICA to 14 TESDA Regional Language Skills Institutes (LSIs) to provide intensive technical assistance in standardized education of the Korean language.

The language instructors will also be involved in language trainers' development, curriculum enhancement, and language skills assessment and certification.

The KOV program, known as KOICA's frontline of assistance, has been in the country since 1990 and has worked in local communities to promote technical manpower development and transfer of advance technology. A total of 243 KOV volunteers have been dispatched to the Philippines since then. Balitang TESDA
