Pinoy fished out of sea after drifting for 16 hrs
MANILA, Philippines - A 32-year-old Filipino seaman was rescued after drifting for what is believed to be 16 hours in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
Mario Gallego Galvan of Iloilo City was still in shock and could not communicate easily when he was found and taken out of the water on May 31.
Philippine Ambassador to Turkey Bahnarim A. Guinomla reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) that they are now readying Galvan's papers for an immediate return to the Philippines.
According to the DFA, Galvan worked as a mess boy of the vessel Angelita P which left Ukraine en route to Brazil.
Portugese captain Miranda Nuñez who headed the ship which rescued the Filipino told embassy officials in Ankara, Turkey that Galvan reportedly jumped overboard after he was threatened by a fellow Filipino seaman.
It was not clear however what triggered the incident between the two.
The Embassy also reported that Capt. Jimmy Milano of the Inter-Orient Manning in Manila, Galvan's agency, has already informed his relatives and that the company is looking for an agent in Iskenderum to handle the repatriation of the distressed seaman and attend to his other needs such as accommodation, food, and medical check-up.
Guinomla said that Iskenderum is approximately 700 kilometers southeast of Ankara close to the Syrian coast. - Mark Joseph Ubalde, GMANews.TV
