Philippine CSOs launch “Peoples’ Global Action” for international migration forum in Manila
Quezon City, Philippines – On 17 June 2008, Philippine civil society organizations with regional and international links joined together to launch the “Peoples’ Global Action on Migration, Development and Human Rights”, a civil society-led parallel even in relation to the 2nd Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) to be held in Manila, Philippines on 27-30 October 2008.
The Peoples’ Global Action is a CSO-led initiative being organized by various civil society organizations called the Philippine Working Group (PWG) on GFMD. The PWG is composed of migrants’ groups and advocates, labor and trade unions, the women’s sector, academe and faith-based organizations who have come together for the collective cause of promoting the rights and well-being of migrant workers and members of their families.
“This parallel event is an important step for greater CSO engagement in the process of the GFMD,” said Rex Varona of the Asian Migrant Centre, a regional non-government organization (NGO) based in Hong Kong. “While there is the official civil society days programmed into the GFMD, the process of participation is very much restrictive.” This underscores the need to mainstream the voices of migrant workers and members of their families, and reintroduce the voice and concrete contribution of the migrants, NGOs and CSOs in the global debate.”
“Today, we also commit to building and strengthening peoples’ alternatives to corporate-led globalization,” added Mr. Varona.
The Peoples’ Global Action will be held on 22-30 October 2008 in Manila. It will include workshops, panel discussions, mobilizations, internal meetings of organizations, space for self-organized workshops, cultural performances, and other activities.
Participation to the Peoples’ Global Action is open to all interested NGOs and civil society organizations around the globe who are keen to engage in the GFMD process. KAKAMMPI News
