‘Katas ng Saudi’ to be shown where the ‘juice’ came from
MANILA, Philippines - The movie about the fruits of labor of an overseas Filipino worker in an Arab country will be shown where the OFW's true-to-life struggle actually happened.
“Katas ng Saudi," whose main characters were played by Senator Jinggoy Estrada and veteran actress Lorna Tolentino will be shown in Saudi Arabia during the Filipino community’s celebration of the anniversary of Philippine Independence in the oil-rich kingdom.
A statement from the office of Estrada said that on June 12, the movie would be shown for free at the Liwasang Bonifacio Multi-Purpose Court of the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh.
Organizers of the 110th celebration of Philippine Independence in Riyadh also want the film to be shown on June 13.
The statement cited records from the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency that the government deployed a total of 96,890 OFWs to Saudi in 2007. Many of them work as carpenters, electrical technicians, machine operators, health professionals, and service workers.
Estrada thanked Philippine Ambassador to Saudi Antonio Villamor “for the modest gesture of remembering the heroic OFWs…through showing the film for free."
“Katas," which got grade A from the Philippine Cinema Evaluation Board, was directed and written by Jose Javier Reyes. Estrada won as best actor, while Reyes won in the best screenplay category for "Katas" during the 2007 Metro Manila Film Festival.
The movie tells about the struggles of Oca Dimaano (played by Estrada) who had to go back to the Philippines after ten years of working as an engineer in Saudi, and face his family whom he barely knows. - GMANews.TV
