Daughter of wealthy Pinay killed in UAE thinks murder was planned
The daughter of the wealthy Filipina businesswoman who was murdered by a Filipino family friend in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said she believed the killing was planned.
“This wasn’t the first time he was scheduled to meet her. He had cancelled the first two meetings. So, maybe he was planning to do it,” said Liza Varona in a report of the news site Emirates 24/7.
Liza is the youngest daughter of Filipino businesswoman Lorna Varona who was found dead and brutally murdered in her luxury car at the industrial area 11 of Sharjah, Dubai.
The suspect, Ricardo Bechavez, is also a Filipino who happens to be a close family friend for over two decades.
Bechavez, who is in his 50’s, allegedly borrowed Dh 250,000 (roughly Php 2,850,000) from Lorna.
He was reported to have been scheduled to meet with Lorna on August 26 to return borrowed sum.
On September 2, police investigators informed Lorna's husband Pablo that Bechavez, arrested the day before, admitted committing the crime.
Good mood
Liza recalled that their mother "was in a good mood that morning. She was very happy. I saw my mom’s face glowing."
“I didn’t even ask her where she was going,” she regretted.
Lorna never went home that day and was later found on September 1 – nearly a week since she went missing – inside the trunk of her abandoned Jaguar, bathing in her own blood.
Her family immediately reported her missing on August 26 when they felt that something was wrong when Lorna failed to return any of their calls.
“It is unlike my mother not to return any calls. That’s what triggered a panic button,” explained Liza, who was aware that Lorna was going to meet up with Bechavez.
Liza said their mother "drove out on Saturday morning to meet him to collect money he had borrowed and to return his passport,” which Lorna kept as a loan guarantee.
Meanwhile, Lorna’s husband Pablo recalled that Lorna told him she would meet someone who would pay the sum Bechavez borrowed.
Bechavez recently wanted to get his passport, claiming that someone wanted to hire him as an interior designer.
A helpful Filipino
Lorna started with a bakery business – Capricorn Bakery – in Dubai but eventually sold it in 2004 to take up other businesses.
At the time of her death, Lorna was managing four family companies — Seaworld Tourism, Capricorn Trading, Capricorn Documentation and Pro Team.
Lorna has a soft heart for her countrymen, Liza said.
“My mother was a very kind-hearted person. Whenever someone, especially from the Philippines, was in need of help, she would always step in,” Liza told Emirates 24/7.
One of her oldest employees, Lita Cassano, described her as a true professional who knew how to separate personal and working relationships.
“She used to get angry with me sometimes but it was only for work. She was a good boss,” she said.
Jun Tupas, a close friend of her husband, described Lorna as a professional business woman with a kind heart for children.
In a report of the news site Khaleej Times, Pablo said he wished Lorna’s body to be returned to the Philippines but authorities requested them to wait until all investigations are finished. - VVP, GMA News
