Iran transfers Pinoy inmates closer to Tehran

MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Jejomar Binay on Wednesday thanked Iran for heeding the request to transfer Filipino inmates from the provinces to prisons near the capital Tehran.

“The transfer will enable our Philippine Embassy personnel to visit the inmates more frequently to check their condition and extend to them whatever assistance they may need,” Binay said in a statement.

The positive response to the Vice President's request was conveyed during the 4th Philippines-Iran Joint Consular Consultation Meeting (JCCM) held in Tehran.

“This gesture by Iran is a positive step in strengthening ties between our two countries,” said Binay.

In the meeting, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Rafael Seguis held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on a host of issues, among them the need to facilitate the conclusion of agreements that would address the concerns of Iranian students and prisoners in the Philippines as well as Filipino inmates in Iran.

The Vice President held “substantive talks” with the Iranian Foreign Minister when he attended the 16th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Tehran as President Aquino’s representative.

STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy. MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday.
