Saudi Arabia still top destination of overseas Pinoy workers -- POEA
The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) on Tuesday said Saudi Arabia remains the top destination of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
In a phone interview with GMA News Online, POEA planning officer Lorenz Almendares said that Saudi Arabia was the top destination among land-based OFWs in the first half of 2012.
According to the POEA Planning Department, the top five destination for OFWs from January to June 2012 were:
1. Saudi Arabia: 175,953 OFWs
2. United Arab Emirates: 129,419
3. Singapore: 73,396
4. Hong Kong: 56,910
5. Qatar: 54,261
The bottom five in the list of top 10 OFW destinations include: Kuwait, Taiwan, Italy, Canada, and Bahrain.
Since 2004, Saudi Arabia has been the top destination of OFWs, as recorded in POEA’s overseas employment statistics.
POEA ‘on track’ in achieving OFW deployment target
Meanwhile, Almendares noted that POEA is on track in achieving its 1.664 million target for OFW deployment in 2012.
“Based on the statistics, we are most likely to reach our target for this year.”

He noted that from January to June 2012, about 891,460 Filipinos have left the country to work overseas, or 53.57 percent of the target OFW deployment.
The first semester figure was higher by 1.31 percent from the 879,960 OFWs deployed in the same period last year.

Almendares explained that deployment bans to Middle East countries poses threat in achieving the 2012 OFW deployment target.
