PDEA reminds travelers vs. drug rings after Pinoy convicted in Hong Kong for heroin

Anti-drug operatives on Monday reminded Filipino travelers not to carry other people's luggage, after a Filipino was convicted in Hong Kong last week for an alleged attempt to smuggle heroin there in July 2011.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) particularly urged travelers not to accommodate the requests of supposed travelers to carry their bags or luggage for them, radio dzBB reported on Monday.

The request to carry another person's luggage has long been a modus operandi of rings engaged in drug smuggling and trafficking, PDEA said.

On Aug. 30, a Hong Kong court convicted a Filipino from Cavite province for drug trafficking.

Customs authorities there found nine kilos of heroin and morphine in his luggage in July 2011.

He was sentenced to 30 years in jail.

The investigation showed the Filipino arrived in Hong Kong with his family on July 28, 2011 when they were stopped at Customs.

Illegal drugs were found in a sealed compartment in his baggage.

The dzBB report quoted the Filipino as saying a couple he met in Vietnam asked him to carry the luggage. - VVP, GMA News
