MANILA, Philippines - A Filipina, who was arrested for possessing 2 kilos of heroin in 2006, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail by a court in New Delhi, an India-based news agency reported.
Press Trust of India (PTI) reported that the New Delhi court found Ma Sol Baillo guilty of possession of illegal drugs and imposed the minimum jail sentence of 10 years.
"Keeping in view the age, family background and all other attending circumstances, the convict is being awarded the minimum sentence of rigorous imprisonment," PTI quoted the court as saying.
The 44-year-old Baillo will also have to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh (around US$1,870 or P78,000).
Baillo, a native of Manduriao, was arrested in 2006 at the Indira Gandhi International Airport as she was leaving for Bangkok. The heroin was reportedly found in a false bottom of her suitcase.
During the trial, Baillo denied the allegations and said the drugs were planted. However, the court dismissed her claims.
