More than 11,000 Pinoys voted in first week of overseas voting


In the first week of the month-long overseas absentee voting (OAV) among Filipinos for the 2013 national elections, some 11,000 people have cast their ballots so far, mostly from the Asia Pacific region.

According to a Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) statement on Saturday, around 11,425 overseas Filipinos have exercised their right to suffrage during the first week of OAV.

The Asia-Pacific region has a total of 5,494 Filipinos who have cast their ballots, followed by the Middle East and Africa with 3,080.

Europe comes in third with 1,590, while 1,261 Filipinos have voted in the Americas.

The DFA said participation from overseas Filipinos is expected to pick up in the following days.

OAV started on April 13, Saturday and will end on May 13 (7:00 p.m. Philippine time), the day when Filipinos in the motherland will cast their votes.

The DFA noted that three modes of voting are being implemented for the 2013 overseas voting which are as follows: Personal Voting, Postal Voting (Voting by Mail) and Automated Election System (Automated Voting).

It also reminded seafarers that they can vote at any Embassy, Consulate, Mission, Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) or  Manila Economic and Cultural Offices (MECO). - Gian C. Geronimo/ VVP/ HS, GMA News
