Pinoy ultramarathoner Cesar Guarin: 'I'm back on the road doing what I love'

Filipino father of ultramarathon Cesar Guarin started the Qatar leg of his Global Run last week, beating the heat of the scorching desert sun.

On his official Facebook page, the 57-year-old Guarin said, “I wasted no time on getting myself back on the road to do what I love doing.”

The route was from Al Ruwais to Al Shamal Road according to the official Facebook account of the Global Run.

He had just completed the Bahrain leg of his Global Run on April 16 after two days of running 137 kilometers in scorching hot conditions.

He started running around 7:00 a.m. when the temperature was "tolerable" until around 11:00 a.m..

Guarin already covered a distance of 23 kilometers by noon and temperatures started to rise by 1:00 p.m.

Guarin said the asphalt road seemed to be melting upon his steps.

By 4:00 p.m., Guarin reached the Al Khor community where he received a warm welcome after covering roughly 45 kilometers.

“What made the run more exciting wasn’t just the challenge of getting distance covered. The satisfaction came as well from discovering more of yourself when your journey takes you on an adventure within,” Guarin said.

He said the good road condition and the occasional pit stops where he took sponge baths helped him hurdle the Qatar leg of the Global Run.

On Saturday, Guarin has already covered 233 kilometers for the Middle East leg of his Global Run which is the seventh of sixteen legs.

He started the Global Run after failing to achieve his dream of attaining an Olympic gold medal in marathon.

When he completes his Global Run, Guarin will be the first Filipino to have run a distance of the world of 40,042 kilometers (or 24,881 miles).

Guarin hopes to finish the Middle East leg by May 20 and the Global Run itself with a Brunei to Philippines trek in 2017. - Andrei Medina, VVP, GMA News
