DFA confirms death of Pinoy seaman in Honduras
The Department of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday confirmed the death of a Filipino crew member of a cruise ship who was shot and killed by a robber during a port call on Honduras' Caribbean resort Island of Roatan.
"A Manila based manning agency confirmed the death of a Filipino cruise ship member in Honduras," DFA spokesperson Charles Jose said in a text message to reporters.
Jose said the victim, an assistant cook on board the cruise ship Norwegian Pearl, was killed last April 7.
He noted that the next of kin of the victim has been informed of his death.
Jose added that the victim's remains are currently in a morgue in La Ceiba City in Honduras.
Also, he said the manning agency is arranging the repatriation of the remains of the Filipino worker.
An earlier report quoted the Honduran Tourism Institute as identifying the victim as Gavan Yaycob, 27.
The institute's director Emilio Silvestre said the incident "weakens whatever effort the government could make to promote tourism and to grow the industry in this country." — Amanda Fernandez/LBG, GMA News
