Filipino language class opens for Fil-Korean kids in Seoul
Over 20 Filipino-Korean children living in South Korea will be given a chance to learn the Filipino language through a three-month language class program.
Under the program, which was a brainchild of the Philippine Embassy in Korea, 21 Filipino-Korean children aged seven to 11 years will learn the Filipino language in two-hour classes taught in Korean from June to August.
At the end of the program, they will undergo a Filipino Camp and encouraged to enter the Philippine Embassy's second Filipino Speech Contest.
The program was implemented in cooperation with the Seoul Global Center (SGC), Pinoy Iskolars sa Korea (PIKO) Inc. and Seoul Filipino Parents and Children Organization (SFPCO).
“We hope we could continue this project not only until August, but make it the cornerstone of a more comprehensive and proactive engagement the Embassy, in collaboration with local authorities, like the SGC, and Filipino community organizations, like PIKO and SFPCO, would like to have with multicultural families through education,” said Philippine Ambassador Raul Hernandez during the program's opening ceremony last June 14.
Ronel Laranjo, PIKO president and class instructor, said the program aims to strengthen the kids' understanding of their Filipino heritage through language.
Additionally, Kim Dong-hoon, director of the SGC’s Daily Living Consultation Team, said Koreans could take notice of these efforts and appreciate multicultural families more. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
