Dimzon retires from OWWA, Palace names replacement

Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) administrator Carmelita Dimzon has decided to leave the agency and will be replaced by Rebecca Calzado.

Calzado's appointment was announced Friday by deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte at a press briefing in MalacaƱang.

Dimzon retired from government service after turning 65, the mandatory retirement age for government workers and officials, last May 30  after serving more than three decades in the government service.

Calzado, 59, previously served as labor undersecretary and deputy executive director IV at the National Wages and Productivity Commission.

She obtained her undergraduate and masters degree from the University of the Philippines.

In an interview, Calzado said her priority would be the interest and concern of millions of overseas Filipino workers.

Asked if there will be movements among OWWA personnel, she said, “Sa ngayon wala pa muna. I will meet the OWWA team to discuss first the plans and programs of the precious administration."

Aside from Calzado, Valte said President Benigno Aquino III also nominated the following to serve as Philippine ambassadors: Domingo Nolasco (Italy), Wilfredo Santos (Qatar), Melita Sta. Maria Thomeczek (Germany), and Nathaniel Imperial (Israel).

Also appointed was Reydeluz Conferido to replace Danilo Cruz as undersecretary in the Department of Labor and Employment.

Other appointees include five new members to the Professional Regulatory Board of Nursing under the Professional Regulatory Commission: Gloria Arcos, Carmelita Divinagracia, Carfredda Dumlao, Florence Cawaon and Glenda Arquiza.

Valte said the appointment papers were signed last May 30. —KBK, GMA News
