Fil-Am wins bid for LA judge
LOS ANGELES - Teresa P. Magno, gang homicide prosecutor, will join the ranks of seven Filipino-American judges in Los Angeles County after winning Office No. 97 on June 3.
Magno will be the first and only Fil-Am judge elected to the bench; her predecessors were appointed.
Magno garnered 247,094 votes or 52.35 percent with all 4,870 precincts reporting. Her opponent Songhai Armstead received 224,916 votes.
Office No. 97 was vacated by Judge David Milton upon his retirement. He unequivocally endorsed Magno 'without any reservation' as his successor.
Magno has been a lawyer for 17 years and has served for 15 years as a Deputy D.A. Besides prosecuting misdemeanors, she has handled 81 felony jury trials.
Every one of the 40 murder cases she has tried resulted in a conviction of at least one of the defendants.
Magno views herself as a servant of the entire populace, and not just a segment of her constituency.
"A Canon of ethics requires that a judge be patient, dignified and courteous," says endorser Metropolitan News Enterprise. "For her, compliance would not be difficult — those qualities are part of her basic nature." — Philippine News
