Pinay beautician wins labor case vs. Saudi employer

A Filipina beautician in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, has won her case against her employer who refused to pay her salary and benefits.

Marilou I. Nicdao received SAR64,750 (more or less P754,970) from her employer after the Al-Khobar Labor Office ruled in her favor during a hearing last May 12.

“Masaya na po akong uuwi sa Pilipinas,” said Nicdao, who was repatriated on May 19.

Prior to this development, the Al-Khobar Labor Office had rejected Nicdao's complaint twice — once because it was not written in Arabic, and again because her employer had told the agency that she was already compensated.

Assistance from the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Al-Khobar allowed Nicdao, who has been an overseas Filipino worker for 14 years, to pursue the case, according to the Department of Labor and Employment in Manila.

Nicdao was given an exit visa by her employer and was originally scheduled to fly home on May 6, but she refused to return until her salary had been paid.

During the hearing, Nicado claimed two months worth of unpaid salary (SAR9,000), end-of-service benefits (SAR51,750), two years worth of vacation leave (SAR4,500), and repatriation.

She received an amount of SAR64,750 on May 16 after her cash advance of SAR500 was deducted from the final amount.

Labor Secretary Rosalinda  Baldoz said in a press statement that Nicdao's case meant POLOs worldwide should "reach out and help, as much as (they) can" the Filipino workers who require their assistance.

“I would also like to call on our OFWs who are facing problems with their employers, or with their work not to hesitate to seek assistance from our POLOs in their countries of destination,” she said. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
