51 Pinoys in Libya sign up for repatriation amid civil strife

Some 51 Filipinos in Libya have signed up for repatriation to the Philippines amid the civil strife in the North African state, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Monday.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said the Filipinos registered with the embassy for voluntary repatriation since crisis alert level 3 was raised by the Philippine government on May 29.

Manila increased the alert level due to heightened tensions in Libya, which has been wracked with weeks of violence.

An augmentation team from the DFA will also be deployed to Libya “anytime this week” to assist in the repatriation being offered for free to Filipinos by the Philippine government.

While in Libya, the team will also meet with Libyan officials, employers of the Filipinos and the Filipino community.

There is an estimated 13,122 Filipinos living and working in Libya, most of them health professionals employed in Libyan hospitals.

Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario flew to Libyan capital Tripoli last week where he met with embassy officials to review the contingency plan for Filipinos in the event of heightened conflict.

Under Alert level 3, Filipinos in Libya are encouraged to leave the country voluntarily as soon as possible.

Filipinos in Libya are further advised to contact the Philippine embassy in Tripoli to coordinate their repatriation. —KBK, GMA News
