Foreign maids may soon be allowed to work in Beijing

China may soon grant work and residential permits to Filipinos and other foreigners working as domestic helpers for foreign executives located in Beijing, according to a report on Chinese news site ECNS on Tuesday.
Beijing's Commission of Commerce is considering a proposal that will allow foreign domestic helpers of foreign executives to stay for the duration of their contracts as long as their employers can provide guarantees.
Some workers from Hong Kong and Macao were considered in the proposal that may enable Beijing to become the second mainland city to allow overseas domestic workers.
Pudong district in Shanghai was the first mainland district to allow foreign domestic helpers in 2017, 21 years after China prohibited individuals—save for diplomats—from hiring foreigners in 1996.
Expats, mostly foreign maids, in the past circumvented their inability to obtain a work permit by coming to China on a tourist visa. Domestic helpers who enter the country this way later opt for an extension or a business visa.
A representative of an employment agency said the demand for foreign maids and better service is increasing in big cities despite higher fees.
He said there was an increased demand for Filipino domestic helpers due to perceptions of them as trustworthy, industrious, and highly-educated.
Discontent over the service of local maids also contributed to the rising popularity of Filipino maids.
The agency consulted by the article said Chinese domestic workers trained by Filipino maids have higher salaries compared to average local maids: 6,000 to 6,500 yuan to 5,000 yuan a month. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
