Pro-OFW groups to gather in PHL for first-ever summit
For the first time, pro-OFW advocates from all over the world will gather in the Philippines to discuss various problems facing Filipino migrant workers, especially those working as household service workers.
The day-long OFW Summit will be held on January 7 at the Women's Center in TESDA Complex, Taguig City, from 7 in the morning to 7 at night.
According to Yusoph Admain, an OFW advocate based in Saudi Arabia, problems facing Filipino household service workers are what prompted them to hold the meeting.
He said a report on what will be agreed upon during the summit will be submitted to Congress and the Office of the President for their action.
Among the topics that will be discussed are:
- pro-OFW bills passed by Congress
- cases involving OFWs lodged with the Assistance to Nationals and how to address them
- economic upliftment of OFWs
- OFW Department/Department of Migration & Development
- political empowerment of OFWs
- general Issues on OFW
"Para sa atin po ito mga kapwa ko OFW, panahon na magkaroon ng pagbabago sa ating hanay bilang mga mangagawang OFW," Admain said as he urged other OFW advocates to participate in the summit.
"Kung kayo po ay kasalukuyang nasa ating bansa at nagbabakasyon dumalo po kayo at puwede po kayong magbigay ng suhestisyon na makakabuti sa ating mga OFW," he said.
Expected to attend the gathering are Acts-OFW party-list Representative John Bertiz, OWWA Administrator Hans Cacdac, presidential adviser on OFW affairs Abdullah D. Mamao, PEZA Director General Charito “Ching” Plaza, TESDA director Guiling Mamondiong, DSWD Undersecretary Virginia Orogo, and OFW advocate Susan Ople of the Blas F. Ople Policy Center. —Ronaldo Concha/KBK, GMA News
