Gloria Arroyo wants P100 million to buy land for poor

MANILA, Philippines — Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will ask the bicameral conference committee to provide a P100-million fund for acquisition of land that will be distributed to more than 6,000 urban poor members.
Arroyo made the request after the Department of Public Works and Highways, which is in charge of acquiring land for poor families at the 422-hectare national government center, informed her that the amount was not included in the proposed P3.757 trillion national budget for this year.
“This is very consistent with what I said when we left for the Christmas holidays that we already passed many good laws, including my own law in 2003, that’s why they are now owners of their property,” she said. “What is important now is to make sure that they are well implemented.”
The DPWH reported that while the beneficiaries were given lots as a result of the enactment of Republic Act 9207 or the National Government Center Housing and Land Utilization Act of 2003, many lot titles have not been processed yet.
