PHL renal disease control program wins award in WHO assembly

Philippine disease control program received a citation in an international health gathering in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in May, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said. The DFA said the Philippines' Renal Disease Control Program won the 2012 United Arab Emirates (UAE) Foundation Prize, which was shared with China's Dr. Chen Bowen. The award was conferred at a special ceremony during the 65th World Health Assembly on May 24, the DFA said in a news release. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the prize consists of a certificate of award, a plaque and a sum of money, currently up to US$40 000. It is awarded to one or more persons, institutions or nongovernmental organizations that have made an outstanding contribution to health development. National Kidney Transplant Institute (NKTI) Executive Director Dr. Aileen Riego-Javier, REDCOP's program director, received the award for the institution. REDCOP implements NKTI's public health projects on the prevention and control of renal and related diseases. - VVP, GMA News
