Waiter faces charges in UAE for setting Pinay’s room on fire

An Indian hotel waiter working in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday faced a Dubai court on charges that he set fire to the room of a Filipina who was his ex-girlfriend last October, a UAE news site reported.

The waiter, 26, told the Court of First Instance he set fire to the mattress and curtain in his ex-girlfriend’s room but claimed he was not conscious of what he was doing, Khaleej Times reported.

He faces charges of arson, damaging property and sneaking into a women-only place and putting others’ lives at risk, the report said.

According to the waiter, he was upset at the time over his breakup with his Filipina girlfriend, 34, who worked at the same hotel in Jebel Ali.

Investigation showed the waiter went inside the hotel’s quarters for women and set the room on fire.

But the waiter told the judge he did not intend to endanger anyone's life, adding he had paid for the damage he caused.

Meanwhile, the ex-girlfriend's roommate, another Filipina aged 28, said she woke up because of the fire alarm system.

“I opened my eyes and the room was filled with smoke. My roommate’s bed was on fire,” she said.

A verdict is expected on February 8, Khaleej Times said.

Fire

The waiter admitted he had a drinking spree before he sneaked into the women’s accommodation. He took one of his ex-girlfriend's shoes and set it on fire on her bed.

He was charged for setting the woman’s shoe worth about Dh200 on fire, along with her bedsheet. The property damage for the fire in the room was estimated at Dh2,100.

"The fire, which we learnt was deliberate, had already spread to a bed, curtain and the wall inside a room," said a police officer. —Joel Locsin/KBK, GMA News
