OFWs from W. Visayas up 5.6% in 2007

The number of land-based workers deployed overseas from the Islands of Panay and Guimaras increased by 5.63 percent in 2007 compared to the previous year.

Ma. Rhea Glynda Calantas, officer in charge of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration - Western Visayas, reported that her office processed 12, 855 contracts last year, or 690 more than the total number of contracts for land-based workers processed in 2006.

POEA-Region 6 covers the four provinces in Panay Island (Aklan, Antique, Capiz and Iloilo) and the province of Guimaras.

Calantas noted a 68.53 percent increase in the number of land-based workers deployed through direct hiring from the figures in 2006, and a 38.11 percent decline in agency-hired workers.

She said the drop could be due to the lengthy procedure in the guidelines for the hiring of household service workers beginning December 16, 2006, particularly the requirement for skills training and assessment, orientation and language proficiency for job applicants.

POEA figures show that 1.073 Filipino workers went abroad in 2007, compared to 1.062 million in 2006. Of the numbers, 809, 740 are land-based workers while 263, 662 are seafarers.

Remittances from OFWs have significantly been contributing to the economic growth. In 2007, remittances through banks were projected to reach $14.7 billion, plus 30 percent sent through the informal channels like the door-to-door delivery system. - GMANews.TV
