Remains of Pinoy killed in Nigeria brought home

The body of a Filipino seaman who died in Nigeria arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City on Sunday.

Vito Cruz, an electrician, was the lone fatality in the burning of oil tanker M/T Keno by a militant group in Nigeria's Port Harcourt, River State last December 19.

All the other 18 Filipino seamen, who manned the ship, survived the said blaze, and the separate militant attack against Port Harcourt’s Hotel Presidential. The survivors returned to the Philippines last week.

Marianito Roque, administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, earlier said that Cruz was entitled to all the benefits due to an OWWA member.

Roque said that according to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Cruz paid his dues to OWWA. His family could therefore be entitled to a P200,000 accident insurance and burial assistance worth P20,000 burial.

“He is an OWWA member so he will get all the necessary benefits from us," Roque said.

Cruz’s family will also receive benefits from the victim’s Makati-based manning agency, SeaGem.

His beneficiaries will likewise be provided with livelihood assistance. Educational assistance could also be provided to Cruz’s children below 21 years old. - Fidel Jimenez, GMANews.TV
