DFA: 59 Pinoys due home from Syria late Tuesday

At least 59 more Filipinos are due home from strife-torn Syria before midnight Tuesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

The DFA said the Philippine embassies in Damascus and Beirut worked with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to repatriate the latest batch.

In a news release posted on its website, the DFA said the 59 are to arrive at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal I at 11:10 p.m. via Etihad Airways flight EY 428.

The 59 were brought to the Syrian-Lebanese border by the Embassy in Damascus and IOM-Syria Monday.

The DFA said the repatriates’ airfare was shouldered by IOM.

"Upon the group’s arrival, the total number of repatriates will reach 4,398," the DFA said.

Meanwhile, the DFA reiterated its appeal to Filipinos still in Syria to seek immediate repatriation as the violence in the country continue to worsen.

For assistance they may call the Embassy at 963-11-6132626, +963-96-8955057, +963-93-4957926, +963-99-2264145, +963-96-8953340, or +963-95-8903893.

Families of Filipinos in Syria who wish to provide the DFA with information regarding their next-of-kin’s present location and contact details in Syria may call the Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers’ Affairs (OUMWA) at (02) 834-3240 or 834-4583 or the DFA’s 24-hour Action Center at (02) 834-3333. — BM, GMA News
