MANILA - The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) advised Filipinos in Egypt to prepare for possible evacuation.
DFA spokesperson Assistant Secretary Raul Hernandez on Tuesday said Crisis Alert Level 2 has been raised in Egypt "in view of the deteriorating peace and order situation in that country."
"Upon the advise of our embassy in Cairo, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs just raised crisis alert level 2 over Egypt," Hernandez said.
Under alert level 2, Hernandez said Filipinos are advised to restrict non-essential movements, avoid public places and prepare for possible evacuation.
Also, the deployment of newly-hired overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Egypt will also be put on hold.
He added, "Returning OFWs with existing contracts may still proceed but we strongly advise them to take precautionary measures."
The public is also advised to postpone non-essential trips to Egypt.
"The embassy is ready 24/7 to respond to request for assistance," Hernandez said.
