Malaysia nabs 3 Filipinos working illegally as security guards
Three Filipinos working as security guards at a luxury condominium in Malaysia were taken into custody this week following a roundup of illegal immigrants by immigration authorities there.
State Immigration Department assistant director Basri Othman said the three were among 20 illegals rounded up Wednesday and Thursday, Malaysia's New Straits Times reported.
"We found out that the three foreigners, claiming to be Sabahans, had forged travel documents and that the identification tags issued by their employer carried Malay names," he said.
He added they are now checking how the three "entered the country and how they had been employed by the security firm."
The New Straits Times report said the three had been the subject of a complaint by tenants at the condominium where they worked.
Earlier, the tenants of the condo at Jelutong on Penang Island lodged a complaint with the state Immigration Department against the three for alleged attitude problems.
While the report did not name the three Filipinas, it said one of them was a 45-year-old woman.
An investigation showed the three Filipinos were hired illegally by a local security firm for the past six months. Immigration officers found they all claimed to be Sabahans.
Rounded up along with the three Filipinos this week were five Pakistanis and 12 Nepalese, aged 25 to 40.
"They entered the country legally but their social passes had expired. Despite overstaying, they secured jobs as security guards," Basri said.
For now, he said his department is working with the National Registration Department and Registrar of Companies to determine the identities of the guards and to identify the rogue security companies. — JDS, GMA News
