Grieving Demafelis family given psychosocial counseling

The family of slain OFW Joanna Demafelis was given psychosocial counseling to help them cope with her grisly death in Kuwait, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said Friday.
The counseling was on top of other assistance, including financial, given to the family by the government days following the discovery of Joanna's body in a freezer inside the apartment formerly occupied by her employers.
In a statement, the DSWD said it is set to extend additional holistic interventions for the Demafelis family, who last communicated with Joanna in September 2016.
Citing a report from the field, the DSWD said the Demafelis family in Sara, Iloilo, has already undergone psychosocial counseling from the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.
Aside from that, Joanna's parents were also given free medical consultation from the municipality's Rural Health Unit.
DSWD-FO VI Director Rebecca P. Geamala confirmed that the social case study of the family which they obtained will be used to determine the appropriate interventions and other social protection programs for the Demafelis family.
The Demafelis family had earlier received a  P500,000 worth of livelihood and educational assistance from President Rodrigo Duterte when he visited Joanna's wake.
The DSWD said the Demafelis family is also continuously receiving assistance through the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program and the Social Pension Program, aside from the burial assistance provided through its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation.
There is also a recommendation for the family to be included in the DSWD’s Sustainable Livelihood Program and to receive medical assistance through the AICS program.
"It is clear that Filipinos are in great need of social welfare support from government because emergencies are always erupting," said DSWD officer-in-charge Emmanuel A. Leyco.
The killing of Demafelis has prompted Duterte to ban the deployment of first-time Filipino workers to Kuwait. —KBK, GMA News
