PHL execs launch hotline for distressed Pinoy workers in UAE

Philippine officials in the United Arab Emirates have launched a new hotline — 056-2732611 — for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in distress.

According to the news site Gulf News on Sunday, New labor attache Delmer Cruz told a community gathering Friday night the hotline will allow them to seek intervention and speed up their repatriation to the Philippines.

Cruz also said they are trying to shorten the time needed for repatriating OFWs in distress, which currently takes three weeks in most cases or a "month or two" in some cases.

Cruz recently took over as the head of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office-Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (POLO-OWWA).

The POLO processes employment-related services of some 400,000 Filipino expatriates in Dubai, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman and Fujairah.

It issues the Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC), a document that proves that a Filipino has been hired legally.

Meanwhile, Cruz stressed the need to enforce more strictly the minimum wage of Dh1,500 for domestic workers.

He said the POLO remains on the lookout for abusive sponsors or foreign placement agencies and blacklisting them if needed. - VVP, GMA News
