PHL hero dog Kabang sports 'new look' after surgery

After being released on Tuesday from the University of California (UC) Davis in the United States where she was treated for eight months, Philippine hero dog Kabang is now sporting a  "new look."

Kabang still does not have a full snout after undergoing reconstructive surgery but it now looks more symmetrical.

Kabang underwent a five-hour surgery at the UC Davis in March to repair her disfigured face, the group "Care for Kabang" said.

The group spearheaded efforts to raise $20,000 (roughly P800,000) needed for the hero dog's surgery and other medical procedures.

In April, the group said UC Davis will not be releasing any photos of Kabang until she is completely healed.

The reconstructive surgery closed the gaping wound Kabang sustained after she lost her snout and upper jaw as she tried to save two young girls from being run over by a motorcycle in 2011.

Kabang's doctors earlier explained that the operation was not for aesthetic purposes but for health reasons -- to prevent infection from Kabang's wounds.

"Pretty girl"

On Tuesday, the group released Kabang's first photo after the surgery; she was in a grassy field and was looking up at the camera.

There were also two visible square patches on her back, presumably from the medical procedures she underwent.

The group said, "The open area just above her mouth is her new nasal cavity."

Five hours after the photo was posted, it already had nearly 2,500 likes.

Some of the comments on her photo included:

Barbara Keane: “She looks great! So sweet. I wish her a long, joyful loved life.”

Juliet Connolly: “This dog is a hero in my country when she saved a child from death, in doing so, her face was disfigured, and through the kindness of some American vet surgeons, this hero dog will get back her normal life. She is a hero, she has the quality of life that even humans never have.”

Melissa Sackett: “Even though I know it wasn't done for cosmetic reasons, she looks so much better!!”

Hannah Sophia Lim: KABANG IS OUR HERO

Porscia Connell: Pretty girl!

Carolina Rojas: So beautifull... Kabang i Wish you the best with your family....you deserve all the love and best...

Thank you from Kabang's owner

Care for Kabang posted Kabang's photo after meet and greet at the UC-Davis on Monday.

The group also posted a photo of a thank you letter from Kabang's owner, Rudy Bunggal.

Bunggal's letter, written in Filipino and translated by the group into English, read:

"I'm Rudy Bunggal and I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart Ms. Karen (Kenngott - founder of Care For Kabang), Sir Rob (Warren - Communications & Marketing Director at UC Davis VMTH) and all the staff and doctors at UC DAVIS who took care and nursed Kabang back to health. Thank you very very much. Also to the donors who helped raise funds to pay for Kabang's medical treatment.. thank you too."

Heroic dog

Kabang was run over by a speeding motorcycle in Zamboanga in December 2011. She reportedly jumped and shielded two young girls from harm's way.

For her deed, Kabang has been named as one of the world's top 10 heroic canines for 2012.

She was flown to the US for surgery in October 2012. Before she could undergo surgery,  Kabang first had to be treated for genital tumor and heartworm disease.

Kabang is expected to be flown back to the Philippines this month and will be reunited with her owners.-- Andrei Medina, Veronica Pulumbarit, GMA News
