Seek safer ground, Palace tells OFWs in Syria amid airstrike threat

Amid the threat of looming US airstrikes on Syria, Malacañang on Sunday reiterated its appeal to Filipinos there to evacuate or at least seek safer ground.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte also asked the OFWs’ relatives to help the government convince their loved ones there to ensure their safety.

“We sent out an appeal to their families to convince their loved ones to go home or at least evacuate to another place where their safety can be guaranteed,” she said on government-run dzRB radio.

She said the government’s main concern for the OFWs in Syria at this time is to get them home safely.

In the meantime, she said Philippine officials there continue their efforts to “convince them to come home.”

Earlier, the Department of Foreign Affairs said it has repeatedly appealed to Filipinos still in Syria to seek immediate repatriation amid the deteriorating situation there.

It said they can call the Embassy in Damascus at 963-11-6132626, +963-96-8955057, +963-93-4957926, +963-99-2264145, +963-96-8953340, or +963-95-8903893.

Relatives of Filipinos in Syria may also provide the DFA with up-to-date information regarding their kin’s present location and contact details in Syria, the DFA said.

Those who wish to do so may call the Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers’ Affairs (OUMWA) at (02) 834-3240 or 834-4583 or the DFA’s 24-hour Action Center at (02) 834-3333 — LBG, GMA News
