Fil-Australian faces Sydney court for killing stepdad

A Filipino-Australian man accused of killing his stepfather two years ago told a court in Sydney on Monday that he committed the crime to “stop the humiliation” he had received from the victim.

Michael Villalon, 29, stabbed and beat Keith Owen Chaney, 69, to death in their home in Mascot in the south of Sydney on February 28, 2012. It was learned during the hearing that he had told a police officer a day after the killing that he just “exploded,”  a report on The Sydney Morning Herald said.

Villalon left the Philippines in April 2009 to live with his parents in Sydney. SkyNews Australia reportedthat he and his stepfather got along at first, but Chaney had allegedly started 'nit-picking' his stepson's behavior.

The victim was found dead by Villalon's mother, Maria, in the kitchen of their two-bedroom home with a knife still stuck under his left eye.

According to SkyNews Australia report, Chaney had accused Villalon of being lazy, among others, and had hit him several times on various occasions.

During Monday's hearing, the court prosecutor said some arguments were due to Chaney's habit of watching pornography. Sydney Morning Herald reported that the Australian did it often and was even jailed in 2009 for watching child pornography. The victim had reportedly tried to kiss Villalon's sister one time.

Villalon had admitted to killing his stepfather, but wished for his charges to be downgraded from murder to manslaughter, reports said.

In his confession, he said he was affected by a mental disorder which allegedly impaired his ability to make moral judgements. He said he heard voices before the incident occurred; afterwards, he had cut his wrists and taken both sleeping pills and mild pain killers.

He also claimed to have experienced a psychotic episode while in jail, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
