Govt help assured to kin of Pinoy fatalities in Vietnam sea accident

Government assistance will be given to the families of the two Filipino seafarers who perished in last week's sea accident off Vietnam, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said Tuesday.

In a statement, Baldoz said the families of the two fatalities will receive “all the benefits due them” in accordance with the employment contracts of the two seafarers and the “provisions of the collective bargaining agreements covering the shipowners and the Associated Marine Officers and Seafarers Union of the Philippines of which the seafarers are members.”

The two Filipinos, along with 17 others, were crewmembers of the Bahaman ship Bulk Jupiter that sank in East Vietnam Sea last January 2. One had been rescued while the rest were still missing as of Tuesday.

According to Baldoz, the local manning agency of Bulk Jupiter, Magsaysay Maritime Corporation, has deployed its representative to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to facilitate the repatriation of the rescued Filipino seafarer, the ship’s chief cook, as well as the remains of two other seafarers whose bodies had been recovered from the sea.

She also said the Philippine Embassy in Hanoi is coordinating with the Vietnam Maritime Research and Rescue Coordinating Center and the Philippine Honorary Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City in gathering updates and making arrangements for the repatriation of the rescued seafarer and the remains of the two seafarers.

Baldoz instructed Philippine Overseas Employment Administration chief Hans Leo Cacdac to convene a meeting of the Overseas Seafarers Committee of the Maritime Industry Tripartite Council to discuss the recent incident and come up with an action plan to prevent or minimize accidents.

“The MITC should also come up with a ready mechanism on effective coordination with manning agents and shipowners,” Baldoz said.
